AC Maintenance

A Guide to Prepping Your AC for Summer

If you have ever suffered through a heatwave without a functioning air conditioner, you know how downright miserable it is.

At Roy’s Plumbing, Heating & Cooling, the last thing we want is for you and your family is for you to have to deal with a broken AC. Our HVAC professionals are here to guide you through the process of preparing your AC for summer. Learn what you can do to take care of your system, keep your energy bills at a minimum, and stay cool all season long!

Replace Your Filter

Air conditioning filters serve to collect dust, dirt, and other particles from the air before it is circulated into your home. A filter that has not been changed out becomes packed full of debris, not only contributing to poor indoor air quality but also making it incredibly difficult for your AC to flow properly.

Make sure to change your filter and replace it every 3 months to avoid wasting energy, dealing with low airflow, and breathing in unhealthy air.

Take Care of the Outside Unit

After months of not being used, your outside AC unit could use some attention!

To take care of the outside unit, you need to

  • Clear away clutter: When your outside unit is blocked by clutter, it struggles to function properly, resulting in a decrease in efficiency and airflow. Make sure all foliage, dead leaves, toys, gardening supplies, and other items are moved away from the unit.

  • Check the refrigerant lines: If the refrigerant lines attached to the outside unit are not properly insulated, your system will experience substantial energy loss. Check the insulation around these lines and call an HVAC professional if you notice any damaged, frayed, or missing insulation.

Examine Exposed Ductwork

Ductwork is a crucial component of your AC. It is responsible for transporting and distributing cooled air throughout your home. When damaged, much of that cool air can leak from ductwork, never reaching its destination. This can result in a significant increase in energy consumption as your AC has to work much harder to keep your home cool.

If you notice any holes, separated pieces, or disconnected joints in your ductwork, contact an air conditioning professional right away.

Clean Vents & the Surrounding Areas

Vents that are covered in dust will distribute that dust throughout your entire home. Be sure to clean your vents to avoid dealing with an extra dusty home.

Also, be sure that the path around your vents isn’t blocked. To ensure you have even airflow in your home, move away any toys, curtains, furniture, or other items that are in front of air vents.

Turn Your System On

Once you have taken care of each of the above items, go ahead and turn your AC on to test it out. If your system isn’t properly cooling your home, something might be wrong. It isn’t uncommon for an AC to become damaged during months of downtime, and it is always best to take care of problems the moment you notice them.

If your AC is experiencing any of the following issues, you need to schedule AC repair

  • It is distributing warm or hot air

  • It is making loud banging, humming, or screeching sounds

  • It is distributing foul-smelling air

  • The outside unit is leaking

  • It isn’t turning on at all

  • It cycles on and off constantly

Schedule an Inspection

Much like your car, your air conditioner requires regular tune-ups in order to maintain top performance. Every spring, before summer hits, you want to be sure to schedule an air conditioner tune-up and inspection. During these appointments, your service professional can ensure that your filters are changed and cleaned, and all important components—such as capacitors, evaporator coils, fuses, drain lines, relays, blower motors, and fan motors—are carefully inspected.

Routine maintenance ensures that your AC is in top shape, ready to take on the summer heat and keep your family cool and comfortable all season long.

In addition to keeping your AC in good shape, regular AC tune-ups

  • Increase the efficiency of your AC

  • Decrease your energy consumption

  • Provide you with fresher, cleaner air

  • Extend the lifespan of your AC

  • Reduce the chances of breakdowns
